I was lucky enough to work with Darryll. I was quiet, shy and lacked the art of conversation and he was the opposite.
He had a way of asking you questions and finding out what you loved and really taking the time to get to know you. He certainly bought me out of my shell.
We both loved music. He’d play YouTube videos of The Boss, Peter Gabriel and many others. We’d sing along to the radio and we’d never miss Pop Master. Darryll always got the year right.
Darryll really made the office a lovely place to be. We will do our best to keep him alive with the wonderful memories we have.
My heart goes out to Helen and all Darryll’s family and friends.
He is missed very much x

Really sorry to hear of Darryll’s untimely passing. One of the most influential of my older friends in my late teens and early twenties.

So many great memories of him through football (playing with him at Barking and against him for Somersham) or there’d be those impromptu kickabouts on the Tye when he’d randomly arrive on his huge bike- you’d hear him about a minute before you saw him! Also, at Barking Chapel including holding Lucy, when she was a new born!

Last bumped into him 10 years or so ago in Cambridge at a George Thorogood gig and had a good catch up, always thought there would be other occasions but sadly not.

He was always generous with his time (welded the wing back onto my first car when I couldn’t afford even the gas he used!), was always mickey taking and larger than life, and with a smile that I’ll always remember.

Rest in peace Darryll, you won’t be forgotten that’s for sure. Xx

I’ve only known Daryll a couple of years but he quickly became a great friend. I turned up at the Maypole the first time not knowing anyone and Daryll went out of his way to make me feel welcome and part of the group.
Always ready with a joke, a smile and a mickey take.
I along with everyone else will miss him terribly.
Do well Buh.

I worked alongside Darryll between 2007-2019. There was never a dull moment, he was such a larger than life character, with such a kind heart. My condolences to Helen and the family. xx

Darryll was a true legend.
I had the pleasure of working with him for 14 years @ BSG.
He was such a character, as everyone knows!
I’ll miss our Monday rants, the banter, the mickey taking (mostly @ my expense!), pop quiz/ten to the top, Greggs sausage rolls & the fashion policing too!
He was also a very kind & family-oriented man & had a heart of gold.
When he told me his diagnosis he comforted me & told me to ‘pull myself together tart’! - that was Darryll for you
I’ll miss you so much Darryll, will never forget you, fly high with those kites & ‘do well buh’!

Hard to believe I’m writing this, buried my 98 year old mum this morning but somehow Darryll’s passing at such a young age feels sadder.
I spoke to him shortly after his diagnosis and I was in awe of his bravery and total lack of self pity, Heck, he was trying to cheer me up!
I’ve known Darryll for over 50 years and together we formed the defensive partnership for Barking, Stowupland, and Sally Army football teams at various times.
Darryll took no prisoners, I can still hear him saying, “Get up you tart” to numerous forwards writhing on the floor at his feet!
Once when playing against each other we had a flair up and actually hit each other, then stood and laughed like drains at our own stupidity.
He loved a laugh, usually at my expense, whether it be my standing on the Bee Orchid he’d thoughtfully taken me to see, my post op bodily imperfections that he found so hilarious, or falling over inebriated on his patio and him drawing a chalk line around me like a crime scene detective and collapsing with laughter. and he never forgot any of them!
Thanks Darryll for the laughs, the gigs, the camaraderie, we’re all going to miss you so much and the world’s a sadder place without you.
Graham

  • Really lovely piece you’ve written there Graham. It really touched me but very fond memories too. Darryll was a real good ‘un! And I was sorry to hear you’d lost your mum recently too. Unfortunately I’m away this weekend else would have gone to the funeral and may have seen you. Take care.
