In loving memory of Alain Philp who sadly passed away peacefully on 9th August 2024 after short illness.

We are totally devastated but so proud of the wonderful, courageous, intelligent and humble gentleman that Alain was, always smiling with his self-deprecating sense of humour, there to encourage and willing to help anyone.

Born in July 1973, Alain lived in the Hipperholme and Lightcliffe area all his life. He attended primary school locally and went on to Holy Trinity secondary school in Halifax. In his late teens and early twenties he played rugby for The Old Crossleyans RUFC.

Alain started his working life in the Courts Service as a bit of a stop gap and was where he met his future wife Sarah. Subsequently Alain and Sarah were married in July 1996 and went on to have two sons Harry and Freddie, who he adored and was so very proud of. Over the years they moved house a few times within the Lightcliffe area, modernising each one as they went along, with Alain doing a lot of DIY!

He began his career in earnest within the financial services sector at Skipton Dealwise which became TD Waterhouse and then TD Direct Investing, where he enjoyed working in the fast-paced stockbroking environment for around 17 years, rising to senior management level. Around 8 years ago he made the move to Yorkshire Building Society in his role of Senior Risk Assurance Manager, which again he very much enjoyed and made many friends along the way.

Alain was a keen golfer from an early age and loved to have a bit of banter after a round in the 19th with his many friends. He also loved to run and completed the Great North Run twice, and then the York marathon in 2013 when he was 40. He also walked a lot with the two family dogs. Family time was premium, especially travelling on holidays and exploring new places, so long as he wasn't away from the village too long!

Above all Alain was a devoted husband, father, son, brother, uncle and 'in-law, and a very loyal, caring friend and colleague to many. He will always be very much missed.

The funeral service will be held on Thursday 5 September at 11.00am at St Matthew’s Church, Wakefield Road, Lightcliffe, Halifax, HX3 8TH, then afterwards at Lightcliffe Golf Club, Knowle Top Road, HX3 8SW.

Dress: Anyone who wishes to dress less formally is encouraged to so.

Parking: There is limited roadside parking around the church and golf club, however, additional parking is available in the Lightcliffe Cricket Club car park, postcode HX3 8UE. There is a snicket from the car park, between the houses, that will bring you out across from the church. There will be people outside the church to give directions.

Access to the cricket club car park is off Wakefield Road. Turn onto Till Carr Lane opposite The Sun Inn pub. Take the first left on Till Carr Lane at the end of the churchyard into a narrow unmade lane that goes to the cricket club car park, which is signposted. Afterwards, it is about a 10-minute walk from the church to the golf club.

I wanted to pass on my condolences to his family after hearing this very sad news this past weekend through a friend. I attended Caddy High School and upon entering 6th form told we had to share some lessons/facilities with the Trinity mob. It was then I met the very humorous and bushy haired (oh yes) Philpy. What a guy with a fantastic sense of humour. I haven't seen him for approaching 30 years as I moved to the Northwest many years ago, but feel very sad to hear this news such was his love of life.... I particularly remember two incidents with him. First, he managed to crash his mums car withing 2 hours of passing his driving test. Most of us would have been racked with embarrassment but not him after the first 5 mins of stick he wore it with pride though not sure his parents shared his view. Secondly he once hosted a house part at his parents house in Hipperholme which escalated into something like the Hacienda in its pomp. I remember his big brother came to chuck us all out but realised it was bigger than him and retreated to his room. Alain got over the 'my parents will disown me' element and enjoyed it to the full. It appears he lived his life like he did at school...with fun and kindness, which he shared with all. The world is a bit duller without him in it.

I worked with Alain for 17 years starting with Dealwise and then TD. He was a great person and was always there to guide and support anyone that needed it. I was shocked and saddened by the news of his passing and will always remember Alain with very fond memories.

Dear Sarah and family, i am so sorry to hear that Al passed away. Like so many others i worked with him at TD. Both starting at dealwise in our early 20s until he left in 2016. A friend and colleague throughout. He was my go to guy on so many things, technical work as well as to have a good giggle about life. He spoke fondly and often about Sarah and the boys. He was calm under pressure and always had a smile, nothing was ever too much trouble. i have an image of him at a conference stood posing for a picture with a group of equally folilcly challenged guys with a big smile on his face ‘proud to be bald’! So when he donned a wig for a 70s theme night it was an unbelievable and self deprecating, hilarious transformation.
One of life’s good guys, a gent, a top bloke, genuine. Taken far too soon, but so lucky to have known him. RIP Al. X

So shocked and saddened to hear of Alain’s passing. I have so many fond memories of our time at work and play with Alain, affectionately known as ‘Phips’ to his mates in the TD office. We started working together in about 2001 when TD bought Dealwise, when I first saw his name I recall thinking “whose this French guy we will be working with?” We got to know each other really well managing the trading and client service teams for a number of years, Alain was everything I’ve read in his memory from other friends and loved ones, a true Yorkshire gent, a positive influence, always able to bring a smile and some perspective to proceedings, even in tougher times. I know family meant everything to Al, and all my thoughts and strength are with you Sarah, Harry and Freddie. Deepest sympathies, rest in peace Phips.

Alain had a sense of humour that could make you laugh, motivate you or help you in many ways. He was an honest, hardworking, devoted Dad and Husband. Alain was one of a kind, humble yet motivational; he was an excellent role model for us all. Alain was a good friend with whom we would discuss many things but mainly Family, Cars and DIY. Alain - Gone but not forgotten. Love from John, Sam, Ben and Charlotte xxxx
