On 11th March 2024 Edward James Pengelly "Jim" passed away peacefully at home whilst holding his daughter Helen's hand.
Jim was born on 1st October 1937 to Fredrick Charles and Leo (Gilbert) Pengelly in Redruth, Cornwall and was the older brother of Angela.
Jim was a very proud Cornishman and whilst he spent most of his adult life living in Nottingham, he always considered Cornwall to be his home.
On 28th March 1964 Jim married Joyce (Baker) at Kidsgrove Methodist Church. Between 1965 and 1972 they had four children: Rachel, David, Helen and Lindsey.
Jim was predeceased by his parents in 1995 and 1999 and his wife Joyce who died on 14th January 1995. He is survived by his sister and all his children as well as five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Jim attended Roskear Primary School, where he passed his eleven plus before starting at Truro School and then Falmouth Grammar School which he left in 1956 with nine O-levels and three A-levels.
He then went on to serve two years National Service in the RAF from 1956 to 1958 where his conduct was noted to be exemplary and he "proved himself a reliable and trustworthy worker".
Upon leaving the RAF he began his long career in the Civil Service where he worked for the Ministry of Labour until his retirement. He worked briefly as a cab driver before starting his own private hire company with his son-in-law Paul. They developed a specialised service concentrated on corporate and long-distance work and had an enviable reputation. Jim eventually wound the business up to allow himself to properly enjoy his well-earned retirement.
Singing was a long time passion and Jim spent many happy years as a member of Carlton and District Male Voice Choir, performing in many concerts, touring and even recording records. He also enjoyed playing the organ and taught himself to use the foot board. He subsequently became the regular organist at his and other local churches. Other hobbies included photography and wine making, both of which he was beginning to enjoy again in the last year of his life.
Jim will be sadly missed.

At Jim's bequest no flowers are required in his memory but if you would like to make a donation to his chosen charity, Cancer Research UK that would be gratefully received. Please do not feel obliged to wear black to the funeral.
Following the funeral, the wake will be held at The Nags Head, Main Street, Woodborough, Nottingham NG14 6DD

In Loving Memory of Grandad,
I didn’t know how to write something for you Grandad and I know you would pick up on countless grammar errors (which I wouldn’t understand anyway..) on anything I did, but here is a little go.
Everyone will remember your immense stature and presence, both physically and in character – especially your height and booming voice. Some of my earlier memories are pretending to laugh because your giant hands tickling were actually like wrestling a very loving boa constrictor! Or climbing you to reach the chocolate biscuits you and grandma had pegged in the tree at the end of your garden. Your voice was unmistakable and your laugh was unwaveringly honest and infectious. You laughed when you meant it and this matched your direct and honest character which is something I hope to learn from.
An insanely clever man! An absolute wealth of knowledge and intellect that will be hard for any future generation to match up to. That did not mean you made the best choices at all times in your life though... I have now seen the full extent of your fashion choices and can only assume that you played dress up in your room because a lot of those jazzy shirts should never, and I don’t think did, see the light of day!
You were a direct man who never beat around the bush. That is something that intimidated me as a young man but something I came to respect and I hope I can learn and benefit from in my future.
In your way, family meant everything to you and your legacy will continue to shape and brighten the lives of your descendants. I find it hard to remember you without a dog who definitely became a part of your family. Whether it was Mitch incessantly barking while you just looked on lovingly or Dot curled around your neck or licking your face, your loving nature shone for anyone to see.
You really were a good one. I can’t recognise a bad bone in your body. Stubborn and grumpy for sure, but good to the core. I hope I can make you proud in my innings.
Rest easy Grandad. I’ll miss you and won’t forget you.
Love
Ben
