In loving memory of Agnes (Nancy) Griffith who sadly passed away on 11th December 2023.
Nancy was born in Cambuslang on 26th April 1930 to Margaret and Robert Bertram. She was their 3rd child and 1st daughter. She had 2 older brothers Willie and Archie and 2 younger sisters Jess and Margaret. She attended Langside Primary then having passed "the quali" went on to Albert Rd Academy. She was given exemption for a year from school to look after her mum and siblings as her mum was bedridden for long periods with leg ulcers. She left school at 14 and always wanted to do shop work which she did for most of her working life until she joined the post office in 1979 as a cleaner. She retired from there in 1990.
She loved dancing and when her cousin was home from Canada for a visit they headed to the Locarno where she met Liverpudlian Bill who was in Glasgow with the Royal Navy. Romance blossomed and they were married in Strathbungo Parish Church on 2nd Aug 1952. They settled in Plymouth but when Bill was posted abroad for two and a half years she decided to return home to Glasgow with Bill following when his posting was complete. Due to an undiagnosed medical issue it was 9 years before they were able to have a family. Margaret was born in 1961 with Billy following 13 months later in 1962. They lived in Alison St then moved to Quentin St where she lived for over 44 years. Bill sadly passed away in April 2004.
She was a very faithful member of Queens Park West which became Strathbungo Queens Park and is now Queens Park Govanhill. She was ordained as an elder in Jan 1990. She loved people and helping others. She was always one of the first to visit anyone who was ill, in need or had been admitted to hospital or nursing home. In fact she used to say she was away to visit her "old dears" and some of them would be younger than her. She made meals for many neighbours, did their shopping and a variety of other things for whoever needed assistance or even just some company. Every Saturday she made cheese and tomato sandwiches for the homeless who attended the 170 club. She was also a dedicated helper there on Sunday evenings.
She and Bill enjoyed family holidays especially Scarborough and visiting Bill's family in and around Liverpool. In later years, after Bill had passed, she carried on her holidays with the family to many parts of the UK, Spain and Canada. She particulary loved Ribby Hall Holiday Village and it was whilst there in Feb this year that she had a major stroke.
A blood clot was removed from her brain at Preston Royal Hospital and this gave her a great chance of recovery from the stroke. Unfortunately it took a real toll on her and she fought hard but finally her body gave up on 11th December 2023.
So many people have said they can't think of her without a smile or laugh coming on.
She was the most amazing wife, mum, mum in law, gran, great gran, sister, aunt and friend and will be so greatly missed by all.

Mum, you were the most amazing person who gave so much to others. I would not be the person I am today if it wasn't for your unending love, guidance, fortitude, patience etc. We made many fantastic memories together being it theatre visits, holidays, lunches, day trips out etc. No matter where you went or what you did you made people feel special. As the saying goes a stranger is just a friend you've yet to meet and that proverb is so true about you. My heart is broken into so many pieces but I know you would want me to smile and laugh whenever I think of you and I am doing that in abundance. I love you so much. RIP wee Nancy xxx

We were the luckiest people in the world to have Nancy (mum) in our
lives. She was the centre of our universe. When we speak about Nancy
we will always have a smile on our faces as we remember her as a warm, caring, funny lady who always had room in her life for one more person. Our children and grand children will remember GG with love, and we will continue to share great story's of this lady who is now embedded in our hearts forever.πŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œ

I can’t think of our wee Auntie Nancy without smiling and remembering all the fun times we had together. She was such a great friend to my mum when we were growing up and we spent so much time at her house in Allison Street. Having her just around the corner was wonderful. She did so so much for others and it never seemed to be a bother. One in a million for sure. I hope she and Helen, my Mum, are having the best time catching up. Love to Mags, Billy and the rest of the family. Xx
