My beautiful mum.
I often think that if mum and dad had had me first, I would be an only child. I would wake up most nights having nightmares, and mum was always there by my side, to comfort me. Keith by contrast was an angel, and slept right through.
Before we went to school we were both reading easily. Bedtime stories and the Camberwick Green ABC mum knew by heart. No matter how tired mum was from working full time in a taxing job, she would find time to cook a Sunday roast and show me how to bake cakes. She made our school uniforms, her wedding dress and a beautiful evening dress for me. She taught me to knit and made me toys and dolls clothes. Mum and dad would spend weekends gardening and growing vegetables in their impressive garden. When I inevitably fell in the fish pond, she was there to scoop me out. She was the most honest person I have ever known, embedding her strong morals in our upbringing. Whenever I needed her, mum was there. She always had enough energy to do it all.
We spent many happy times together, just mum and I. For a few consecutive years we were lucky enough to get tickets to Wimbledon, and we would ride the tram back to my apartment in London, followed by a visit to the local kebab shop. I’m pleased to have been able to expand mums’ palate. Mum and I spent a wonderful few days together in the Czech Republic for my cousins wedding. Those few days I will always treasure, walking up to the castle, dipping our feet in a fountain and having coffee in the square.
Her vision and drive to learn new things always shone through. Starting the local village babysitting circle in the 1970’s with a token system, teaching herself new computer skills, taking art classes, and learning to speak French fluently.
We would spend our annual holidays camping in France, and eventually it led to mum and dad buying a run-down farmhouse in the Vendee. I remember my shocked reaction when I saw it, but mum was ahead of the curve with her vision, and we spent many happy years renovating it during the school holidays. The only music our family could agree on, on our way to France, was Simon and Garfunkel, so the album played on repeat in the car for hours on end.
Mum, thank you for everything. You were an incredible, thoughtful, clever, loving person. How lucky I am to have been able to call you mum.
