In loving memory of Elke Watson (née Schwab), 10 July 1940 - 18 June 2023:

Elke Watson's life was a tapestry of adventure, love, and cultural exploration. Born on 10 July 1940 in Bremerhaven, Germany, she was the daughter of Heinz and Hanna Schwab. From an early age, Elke displayed a passion for literature and languages, which would shape the course of her life.

Her academic journey led her to Heidelberg University, where she pursued her interests in English and German Literature. Fate intervened during her time at Heidelberg, and she met her first love, the Venezuelan Antonio Sanz. Following their marriage, she took on his name Elke Schwab de Sanz.

Together they embarked on a new chapter in Venezuela, where Elke shared her knowledge and passion for German culture as a Lecturer at the Language School of Universidad Central de Venezuela. She also dedicated herself to teaching English and German at Colegio Humboldt and Instituto Educacionales Asociados, leaving a lasting impact on her students.

The union between Elke and Antonio brought forth two daughters, Elke Cristina and Silke Corina. Their family flourished for nearly three decades until life took them on separate paths, and Elke and Antonio eventually divorced.

But life had more in store for Elke, and in 2000, she found love again in Victor Watson, affectionately known as Les. She embraced this new chapter wholeheartedly, selling her apartment in Venezuela and retiring to England to start a fresh journey with Les. Their love blossomed, and they exchanged vows in 2001, solidifying their commitment to one another.

Throughout her retirement, Elke found immense joy in simple pleasures. Gardening became a cherished hobby, and she took great pride in tending to her plants. Her affection for animals led her to care for her beloved cats, providing them with a warm and loving home. Additionally, she embraced modern technology and found delight in playing games and socializing on her computer.

On 18 July, after a brief battle with cancer, Elke Watson peacefully passed away, leaving behind a legacy of love, knowledge, and cherished memories. Her indomitable spirit and dedication to her passions have undoubtedly touched the lives of many, and her presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

May her memory be a source of comfort and inspiration to her family and friends as they carry her light in their hearts forever. Rest in peace, dear Elke Watson.
