I had the privilege of first meeting Greg in 1997. I was a student who had taken a difficult journey in trying to become a social worker. I was starting to lose hope that someone would give me a chance to complete a placement, without this I would never be able to complete my course and become a social worker. It is at moments like this that sometimes if we are fortunate enough someone comes along who makes a difference. Luckily for me Greg was this person. He believed in me, had trust and confidence that I had what it took to one day be a good social worker. Greg was always positive and encouraging and no better teacher could I ever have wished for. He was a kind, funny, generous and wonderful man who enabled me to achieve my goal. I learnt so much from Greg not only as a teacher but as a friend.
I had the pleasure of knowing Greg for some 18 years. Greg was a wonderful man. A true gentleman. Nothing was ever too much trouble for him. You never had to ask Greg for support, he always gave it willingly. All of those that knew Greg had the upmost respect for him. I have never met anyone, personally or professionally who had a bad word to say about him. It is right to say that all who knew Greg were enriched by the experience.
I must finish by mentioning Greg’s family who were the most important thing in his life. He loved Thelma and his daughter Katherine with all his heart. I remember Greg bringing in a school report of Katherine’s to work one day as he needed to share his pride and joy at her wonderful achievements.
Whilst Greg is no longer with us he will always remain as a guiding light, a comforting hand on our shoulder and a wise word when we need it. Greg will live on in all of us fortunate enough to have known him.
Dear Greg I shall miss you but never forget you. Thank you for all you were and all that you enabled countless others to be.
