I knew Gerry from 1974 - a wonderful man. At first as a teenager, I used to think he didn't like me much, as he didn't say much. But that was just his way, he was very generous with advice and his immense practicality. Things like pulling a car out of a ditch with the tractor - and then later with another car, getting the exhaust vaguely round again after I squashed it on a country lane. I think he liked the challenge!
