Many condolences to David's family and his army of close friends. It was a privilege to know David - since 1999 - when he taught me a lesson in fluid dynamics, proving that beer could be drunk faster from a half pint jug than a pint glass! Always funny, always charming & sorely missed. Top form!

I miss you very much David, but I bet even now you would tell everyone to keep smiling and that there’s no point in being miserable. 😉

The attached frame will hang as a permanent tribute to David above where he used to sit at the bar in the Unicorn. The letter within the frame is David through and through. We miss him greatly.

The little boy in the photo with David - taken at the ‘regulars’ table in the Lord Raglan is just 19 months old - knew David for all of those months. They had a lovely bond, Archie could mimic David’s memorable laugh. We all miss him so much…. Rest easy dear friend xx

David was a lovely human being, full of laughter, hysterical stories and a true gentleman. So many memories of evenings at the unicorn, sometimes David in his dressing gown just popping in for a quick night cap….2hours later he would go home. He was the life and soul of any gathering, kind and generous. We will miss you. RIP, lovely David. You were a legend.

Cousin David always gave me such warm, welcoming hugs on my visits. 'My favourite Cousin, he would say...then wrly add, my ONLY cousin!' I shall miss his twinkly giggles and anecdotes, and raise a toast to such a dear man and beloved Kinsman.

David was "the glue" to so many people, an infectious laugh when he had the fits of the giggles which spilled over to all around him, Many an evening playing spoof for half a master brew will be fondly cherished
When asked how he was ?? the response would always be..."Top form, Top form"
They don't make them like him anymore, a true inspiration to us all
He will be sorely missed
Rest in peace x

David was the heart and soul of our hockey club. He was, like so many have said, a true gentlemen. He had time for everybody and had an infectious cheerful disposition. Many memorable conversations and nights spent raising a glass.
He is already very missed and will always be.

David was 1 in a million and I don’t think I will ever meet another like him. We had a lovely rapport playing cards this past 8 years and we would both giggle away often but were also very competitive. His stories, and he had lots of them, were always hilarious and I enjoyed his company enormously. A true gent, I will miss him dearly, he really was larger than life.

David was one of the first people I got to know when I moved to Marden in 2000. We used to meet in The White Hart at Claygate for a few lunchtime halves. Then later in The Wild Duck for a few more. David kept the cricket club going for many many years. He was devoted to the club and the villagers of Marden. More than anything else though, he was a true Gentleman. I never heard him say a disparaging thing about anyone. We could all do a lot worse than try and be a bit more like David.

David was like an uncle to me. When I think of him, it’s memories of laughter and many late evenings in The Unicorn. Sometimes for a Tio Pepe but also just to have a chats and enjoy the company of others. He was a real people person always bringing cheers.

We had a competition between us with practical jokes sometimes unbeknownst to the public around us. I won in the end, 7 v 6. I will miss him.

May God bless him and family.

Fond memories of David led me astray my introducing me to the card syndicate and I was still playing occasionally 45 years later. Played hockey with him and always enjoyed his company, he will be sorely missed at the club and the village

Such fond memories of David for many years through hockey umpiring in Kent and also around the village. He was always a welcome visitor at Maidstone HC on the way back to Marden - "just having one for the road" with David Smith. He'll be so missed.
