In loving memory of Robert Thomas Shorter who sadly passed away on 22nd December 2022.
He was born on 28th August 1930 at 'The Firs' in Wheatey, Oxfordshire where he was known to his parents and sisters as 'Mick'. However, he was known to his wife, Sheila, friends and family in Colchester as Bob.
Bob joined the Somerset Light Infantry for his National Service at 19 yrs old, and spent time serving in Mogadishu and various parts of Kenya, mainly as a lorry driver, as well as in Colchester where he was a driver for senior officers. On completion of his National Service in 1952, he remained a reserve until 1962.
Bob was never out of work througout the rest of his working life, even though he was made redundant on more than one occasion. His employers included the 'Electric Light' (later to become the Electricity Board), Lancaster Radiators, the Lathe Company and latterly Woods of Colchester.
After retiring he spent his time gardening, at the gym and continuing to support Colchester United. Intensely proud of his family, Bob loved to spend time with his grandchildren. After suffering a stroke in 2000 he was cared for by his wife, Sheila, until her health began to suffer and they made the joint decision to move into a care home, where they were to spend their final years together.

Sorry to hear about Bob. I used to work at Woods when he was there.

I was very saddened to hear of Uncle Bob's passing. The one consolation is that he and Aunty SAheila will be together again. I remember the several parties we held for the Aunts and Uncles on New year's eve (of which I have some video). Condolences to all of his family and friends. RIP Uncle Bob. xx
