Bob Cunning was one of the pioneers of the SNP, whose efforts established the party's credibility long before it achieved the mainstream status it now enjoys.
Bob first joined the party in 1967, and was recruited into the newly formed Bishopbriggs Branch in 1968. He was an active campaigner over many years, standing as a candidate on multiple occasions at both council and parliamentary level.
He was one of our first local SNP councillors, winning the Crowhill by-election to Strathkelvin District Council in September 1976, and going on to become depute provost in 1977 and leader of the council from 1978 to 1980.
He remained active locally up to and beyond the 2014 referendum.
Those of us who followed on, owe a huge debt to Bob and the activists of his generation, whose perseverance laid the groundwork for where we are today.
