Peter was born on 5 March 1920, the first-born and only son of Thomas and Nellie Heppell. He had three sisters - Paula, Brenda and Helen. Paula and Brenda predeceased him

Peter married Lucie in July 1949 and they had 52 years together. They had three children, Sally, Tom and Mark, who each had two children. Peter has six grandchildren - Emma, Victoria, Jenny, Anna, Matt and Lorna - and nine great-grandchildren - Lucie, Olivia, Madison, Ayda, Imogen, Millie, Teo, Molly and Lottie. His wider family also includes his daughters-in-law Roberta and Susan and his grandchildren-in-law Huseyin, Matt, Helen and Will
