Steve Hudson (1967 – 2022)

Steve was born in the family home in Hutton on Wednesday 15 February 1967; the second child of Brian and Linda, and younger brother to Wendy. He died on Wednesday 27 July 2022 at East Surrey Hospital following a short illness during which he was surrounded and supported by loved ones.

Family: Dad and Granddad

Steve was fiercely proud of his children, raised with their mother, Frances. With his eldest, Mike, and youngest, Annabel, Steve shared a passion for Formula 1 (and the travel that comes with attending Grand Prix in far-flung destinations); between the three of them, they visited Abu Dhabi, Singapore, and Bahrain, repeating some trips multiple times! Steve and Annabel were particularly close, and many good times and happy memories were shared over a Long Island Iced Tea – a long-time favourite for both. Steve shared a deep-rooted love of Japan with his middle child, Lucy. The whole family enjoyed many years living in Tokyo, but Lucy (and her fiancé Cameron) were particularly fond of it and travelled back to Japan to spend time with Steve during his second stint living there.

Steve adored his first granddaughter Grace and would have loved nothing more than to continue to spoil her and watch her grow up. It is desperately sad that Steve will miss the arrival of his second granddaughter, due in September, who he was very excited to meet.

Steve provided his family with unparalleled opportunity, travel, and fantastic food – all the things he was passionate about, and enjoyed even more when sharing with his loved ones.

Work: Spotty

“Spotty” was the enduring and affectionate nickname from a 30-year career in the money markets, and how he was known to many long-term colleagues and friends; he was also known as Mufasa, and by many other monikers. Steve started at Tullett Prebon in 1987 on US Dollar derivatives, learning his trade and building friendships for life. He moved to ICAP on USD Interest Rate Swaps, before taking an opportunity to move Tokyo to run the JPY derivatives desk for Totan (part of ICAP), a job he thoroughly enjoyed. After a brief attempt at retirement in Eastbourne (2011-2016), Steve returned to a Dollar desk in London for BGC. He then fulfilled his dream of returning to Tokyo initially for BGC, before going full circle and re-joining TP for a short stint. He finally returned to the UK for a second attempt at retirement in 2020.

Steve was well thought of wherever he worked, and many colleagues enjoyed working with him on numerous occasions throughout his career, demonstrating his character and good nature as a co-worker and manager. The kind words shared on LinkedIn and sent to his children by colleagues and friends from the money market show him to be an ‘all round good guy’.

Football: Huddo

“Huddo” was a passionate football fan. Having played to a good standard at Shenfield School (and convinced that he should have gone pro), his teammates and friends wanted to continue playing as a group after school, and so Shenfield AFC was born. Steve played 347 games in goal for Shenfield and somehow scored 2 goals. He holds the Club Record for most First Team starts at 278. He was an integral member of the team of 1997/98, who swept the board winning all 3 trophies (Mid Essex Premier Division, League Cup and Knock-out Cup). He played in the very first competitive Shenfield fixture way back in 1985 and continued until 2004, when he and his family moved to Japan.

Despite the distance and his inability to play upon his return, Steve continued to support the club and attended matches and social events when he could. He loved Shenfield AFC dearly and will be missed by the club.

Many happy memories of the Hudson family and Steve.
We played football in our back gardens myself and Steve.
Our families are still in touch and we were all sorry to hear the sad news.
Rest in peace

Steve and Wendy along with Linda and Brian were family friends and neighbours in Rosemead Gardens.
Steve was a good friend of mine particulary in our youth playing football in our back gardens regularly.
We lost touch but I would occasionally see Steve around Billericay or on the train.
Really top man from a top family even now our families remain in touch despite Linda moving from Rosemead Gardens years ago.
So sad to hear the news.
Rest in Peace.

All the best mate - I shall miss our weekly "therapy" sessions. You were without doubt the finest keeper I ever played with and one of the brightest men I've ever known. You will be missed by all....

Dear Frances, Mike, Lucy and Annabel,

My sincerest condolences for you loss.

Steven and I shared a common taste in food and wine - and voracious appetite for both! We frequently went out together in Tokyo to indulge our passion while solving all of the world’s problems in the process. Naturally we’d forgotten our genius by the following day and would have to do it al over again. I do miss those days and I will certainly miss Steve.

One nickname we had for Steve on the desk was Mufasa because we joked that when he yelled people shook like the hyenas in Lion King. But when we bought a stuffed lion and hung it in effigy Steve could not stop laughing.

And that’s the crux, in this money-centric business he wasn’t just out for himself, he was an advocate for his fellow workers. He raised the bar for everyone, and professionally was the only person to roll back absurd schemes that he inherited.

But he suffered no fools. He recognized the absurdity of the business and the lack of appreciation most people had for how lucky they were to catch the wave they were riding.

And that’s what will be missed most, laughing and regaling crazy stories that as he often said, “you can not make this stuff up.”

Condolences to his family and to his children who he loved and often spoke about. A larger-than-life character a good man who has gone too soon and will be missed, R.I.P. Steve. The lion sleeps tonight.
