There are not enough words to praise Chamberlains for all they have done for me. At what is one of the worst times in anyone's life, they seamlessly wove kindness, care and compassion into everything they did. Never having organised a funeral before and struggling with the process, their patience, guidance and humility was deeply appreciated. Gary and Sue looked after me from the start, and I knew that my mother was in safe hands with them. They went over and above to make sure that every wish was accommodated, with courtesy and respect. Gary’s officiating of the actual service was professional and personal, and ensured that my mother’s final farewell was a truly special one. I know that she could not have wished for anything better. I’d also like to thank all the faces behind the scenes who I didn’t meet. What you do does not go unnoticed or unappreciated. Thank you to everyone at Chamberlains for going above and beyond expectations.

It is a shame that you can't give any more than 5 stars for this review, because this was already going to be a 5 star review before the funeral even happened. In fact, it was already going to be a 5 star review after we met Gary for the first time. So it feels like we're doing the funeral itself - which was also exceptional - a disservice by not adding any more stars for that. It all started after a long and arduous day of visiting different funeral directors, collecting brochures, asking questions, and taking notes. Then, the plan was to rendezvous back at home, compare notes, discuss our thoughts, and choose the most favourable one. By the end of the day, that had changed from choosing the most favourable one, to choosing the lesser of all evils. Such was our experience with everyone we had visited so far. We were on our way home, looked at the time, and decided that we might just about be able to squeeze one more in beforehand, before they all start closing for the day. And on a whim, we chose Chamberlains. And that was when night turned to day. Stepping through those doors was like stepping into an entirely different world to the one we had become accustomed to experiencing throughout the rest of the day previous to this moment. We were greeted by Gary, just about the most elegant, proper, and well spoken man that you are ever likely to meet. An ardent perfectionist, using a ruler to write anything, just to make sure it was neat and level. And inputting everything on his calculator 3 separate times, just to make sure he had gotten it all correct. Our deceased husband, father and grandfather could not be in better hands with anyone else, than he would be with Gary. He invited us into a room, which felt much more homely than the office-like environments of everywhere else. Sitting on a sofa in front of a fireplace, we talked and talked and talked with him, as he attended to our every desire, right down to the last detail. He tailored everything exactly to our specifications. I can't stress this enough. There was no "here is a list of things, and here are their prices". There was a lot of "here is something we can do here, and if we tweak this other thing, then that would open up for this". He had to sit and work out the logistics of achieving our specific things, and was only too happy to do so. Past closing time, I might add. And then he downplayed it as no big deal when we mentioned that we were keeping him from going home. And not because he was about to make a sale, either. In fact, he hesitated to mention services that he thought would be relevant to us. It made him uncomfortable, because it felt to him like he was unintentionally making a sales pitch. No, this was about making sure that before we left the building, we had exactly what we wanted, in exactly the way that we wanted it, while still keeping things within our budget, by finding clever ways to cut costs, without sacrificing the dignity of the deceased, or the wishes of the bereaved. We were so impressed, that when we left and got back into the car, we collectively decided that there wasn't even any need to go back home and discuss anything. One of us observed that it was the first time that we had smiled all day. We had just found our funeral director. We were kept fully informed throughout the process any time something occurred, all the way up to the funeral itself, by Gary and Sue. And Sue navigated the difficult task of payment for us, with nothing but grace, patience and understanding. Then, at the funeral, such care was taken with every little detail, that Gary even asked for permission for little things that would normally be considered just a regular part of the funeral ritual, just on the off chance that anyone objects to any of it. His top priority was always that things went exactly how we wanted them to, no matter how small. And in fact, when we threw him a curveball on the spot after the funeral, with a request for an open coffin, he was only too happy to oblige, despite no notice on the matter. And how about the after care? I hesitate to even call it after care. It was more like some new friends, offering up the gesture of being just on the other side of a phone at this difficult time, if we ever needed help performing this task or that. And all of it completely free of charge, by the way. This is not so much a funeral director business, as it is a group of people who genuinely care about helping people going through a difficult time, and - due to how much of their time it occupies - are lucky enough that it is something that they just happen to be able to make a living wage doing. I truly believe that if this funeral director business didn't exist, then the people in it would be running some form of bereavement charity instead, doing the same thing. If you think you can find a better funeral director than Chamberlains anywhere in Walsall or the surrounding areas, then good luck to you. Because we certainly failed to do so. And it wasn't even close.

Gary and the team at chamberlains funeral directors were compassionate, professional, and incredibly supportive during a difficult time. They handled every detail with care and dignity, making the whole process feel smooth and respectful. Their kindness, clear communication, and attention to Lesley’s wishes truly meant a lot to us. We are deeply grateful for their guidance and would highly recommend their services.

  • 5 Amy Corbett 25th Feb 2026

From the start Sue and Gary were an amazing help to myself and my family. They were extremely professional, attentive and sympathetic.
Gary conducted the funeral, and I can not personally thank him enough. His words, his passion and sensitivity was perfect. He ensured our dad had a beautiful, personally and peaceful send off- something we will never be able to show our appreciation for.

Sue and Gary both ensured myself and my sister understood all the process, booking in extra appointments for us to make sure everything was correct and to ours and our dads wishes.

Chamberlain- thank you. One of the most difficult periods of our lives, made a little easier by your amazing service

  • 5 Linda Welsh 25th Feb 2026

From the very first contact with Sue & Gary we were met with genuine care and compassion. I had never had to deal with arrangements before I lost my mum and they guided me throughout with patience and understanding.
The service that Gary officiated for mum was so poignant and focused around mum and led to comments from everyone that they had never been to a service like it where the funeral director/celebrant had been so genuine. The way Gary looked after my dad was second to none and we will always appreciate this.
I must also mention the service that Gary did for mum at the cemetery when it was time to inter her ashes, despite the pouring down rain, his words were exactly what we needed and again delivered with compassion.
    Words cant express how
grateful we are that Mum herself had pre chosen Chamberlains to look after her when she passed away and I cant recommend them enough.

  • 5 Ella Hutchinson 25th Feb 2026

We can't thank them enough & would highly recommend them to anyone who has the unfortunate time of planning a funeral, they really do help take some of that stress away.

It is with great pleasure and thanks to all at Chamberlains for the recent funeral service provided to our Dad, Dennis Russell.

The team were exemplary from the very start during the process of helping and organising, using compassion, empathy and care upon receiving Dad into their care, through to the arrangements, the follow ups, the up and above service provided on the day of the funeral, beyond and throughout the whole experience.

Not at any point has any one not given 100%. Chamberlains should be very proud of the service all of the team provide - well done, you are highly recommended.

Many thanks Darren for your kind feedback and five star review.
  • 5 Nasreen Thakker 6th Dec 2025

From the outset of our contact with Chamberlains I found Gary Lewis to be completely professional. I've known Gary and his family for many years but didn't realize he was part of Chamberlains. Despite Gary knowing us it didn't detract from his dealings with us. Gary helped me and my sister wash Mom s hair whilst she was in the Chapel of rest, he guided us through it all with complete respect and compassion. Gary understood how emotional things were for us, he honoured me as the "client" which I appreciated as there were some interferences but he remained calm and strong throughout. Gary and Sue his colleague made my experience of grief so much more "pleasurable". I will never forget the experience of Chamberlains walking this painful journey with us. I fully and highly recommend Chamberlains to anyone requiring funeral services. I believe they will work to the best of their ability, ensuring that maximum support is given with great sensitivity and kindness. May God bless Chamberlains now and in the future, keep up the sterling work you do and take good care of yourselves, kindest regards Nasreen Thakker and family

Thank you Nasreen for this detailed and heartfelt review. We really appreciate all your kind words.

They handled every detail with care and dignity, making the whole process feel smooth and respectful. Their kindness, clear communication, and attention to Lesley’s wishes truly meant a lot to us. We are deeply grateful for their guidance and would highly recommend their services.
