In our opinion, JG Fielder & Son are the most unprofessional Company we have ever had the misfortune of dealing with. Unfortunately this Company were allocated to us under a pre-paid Funeral Plan & therefore we were obliged to allow them to provide the Funeral arrangements for my Late Father. At first the Company appeared to be diligent, but this soon diminished. At our face-to-face meeting the Funeral Director didn’t seem interested in my Father’s life. He asked some very brief questions, but our answers didn’t seem to compel any genuine interest. In February they emailed us someone else’s Funeral Arrangements which we found incredibly unprofessional. Whilst they eventually acknowledged this & claimed that “no further action was required because there were no details enclosed”, the inclusion of that Client’s full name, email address & funeral wishes made it a rather blatant violation of data protection. A simple apology would have been more appropriate. They delivered my Father’s ashes in a cardboard box despite acknowledging that we had previously requested a floral scatter tube. The individual who delivered the ashes to us was the Senior Partner of the Company & his manner at the doorstep was bizarre, to say the least. We only got one word, or if we were lucky, two words from Mr Fielder. It does not surprise me in the slightest that there is another negative review on the ‘Yell’ website regarding the exact same issue. They offered a replacement scattertube, but months after the ashes had already been scattered. The emails I received from Chris Fielder I felt were rather harassing & discourteous; not at all what I would expect from a Funeral Director. These incidents all happened at a time when our family was still enduring the profound emotional agony that comes with the loss of a loved one. I simply cannot forgive them for their unprofessionalism & their lack of compassion. I therefore urge anyone who is considering entering into business with this Company to think very carefully before doing so.

The team were very kind, helpful and supportive. I was arranging the funeral as next of kin for my cousin, but I lived 120 miles away and it was all done over the phone, e-mails and electronic forms. On the day of the funeral I felt supported.

Their compassionate team of professionals are available round the clock with help and advice, whether the family wants a religious or non-religious funeral.

Victor and Chris Fielder and their team offer a range of services, whether it be a traditional burial, simple cremation service or a green funeral. They are happy to support families organise a personalised funeral service that reflect their loved one’s wishes.

They offer the flexibility of home visits, office appointments or video and phone arrangements so that families may discuss funeral arrangements in the most comfortable and suitable way for them.

A typical funeral with J G Fielder & Son will include the collection and care of the person who has died, liaising with third parties, a Mercedes hearse and a handmade coffin. Other funeral transport options include horse-drawn carriage, motorcycle sidecar hearse, matching Mercedes limousines or a vintage VW Camper.

The York-based funeral directors have 2 Chapels of Rest which can be used by the family or friends to grieve and reflect on the memory of their loved one. Other services include an in-house embalming service, bereavement counselling and repatriation.

    It is unfortunate that you have chosen to leave a review in this manner, as its content does not reflect the feedback given directly to us in writing by both yourself and our client in the months following the funeral, which I quote:

    “It was a lovely service & we were very impressed with your professionalism.”

    “I would like to express my gratitude for the level of professionalism & dignity, provided by our assigned Funeral Director”

    It appears your view has changed since we felt it was necessary to try to contact our client to discuss what was happening with regard to payment of our invoice, after a payment plan we agreed to was not met on 3 separate occasions, which we had generously agreed to after the funeral insurance you refer to, turned out to have been cancelled.

    I am most disappointed to read that you feel the funeral director was not interested in your father’s life, as he spent a great deal of time discussing stories and memories with you, many of which he can still recall nearly 18 months after the service.

    With regards to the scattertube, yes we acknowledge this was not provided, but had we been told that this error had been made, it would have quickly and easily been rectified. Unfortunately you did not raise this with us until over 12 months after we delivered his ashes to you. When you did, within 24 hours we issued an apology and offered to provide this for you free of charge.

    The email you refer to was sent in error, which we acknowledged, however as I have already discussed with you, did not contain any client information whatsoever. The name and email address was that of a celebrant, whose information is publicly available, they were also made aware of this email, and are in agreement that there are no data protection issues. The content of the email was only a very brief summary of the titles of sections of the service to be printed in a service sheet.

    Both Victor and Chris Fielder are disappointed to receive this review. As a company we feel we have continuously endeavoured to support you and your family through this difficult time, as we have done to the over 300 families that have chosen to leave us a 5* review for this branch alone.

    The funeral had been planned in advance by our friend, and we just carried out his wishes. Firstly, we had a meeting to discuss all requirements for the funeral, the team at fielders were helpful, efficient and friendly and helped us to make the funeral and the day itself go smoothly.

    John and his team were extremely helpful and compassionate throughout the whole process. Everything ran smoothly on the day - even making allowances for three family members who chose to be pallbearers at the last minute.

    I hope to not use their services again too soon but I will not hesitate to contact them again when the time comes.
