I recommend the staff at this branch of Coop Funeral Care. We were treated with sensitivity and understanding throughout by Marta, our funeral arranger, and Darren, our funeral director on the day. There was one misunderstanding over communication but otherwise all went smoothly through the planning and actual service which we ran ourselves. Thank you, Marta and Darren!

  • 4 Adrian McAndrew 29th Nov 2023

The family were very impressed with the professionalism and dedication shown by Marta. She was very sensitive and empathetic through all of her engagement with us.
The only downside was the SISTER flowers were not delivered to order and did not have the colourful impact we wanted in the colours of the Guyana flag.

Mr Immanuel King was helpful and patient in making the funeral arrangements and he was very keen to ensure that all the details were correct and as we wanted them to be. Darren and his colleagues on the day of the service were attentive, helpful and sympathetic. Overall we were pleased with the service that we received. Thank you.

Immanuel King provided an excellent service. Very calm, courteous and efficient, just what was needed. The staff from Hayes lead by Coline were also excellent.
Review would have been even better but for some minor misunderstandings over appointment times.

I would’ve put a ‘good’ rating even after the poor start we had with a fd (however, their isn’t that option). Unfortunately, when we came in to Coop office, after the passing of my father.
I thought the fd was Ill-mannered, didn’t seem the least bit sympathetic or empathise with our sadness, a bit galling, as this is his business, to show a sympathetic ear, treat his clients a with empathy, no?
The fd didn’t talk us through what happens now, what the process is, explain the mountain of documents that need to be signed. The fd gave no explanation of any of the documents, just put them in front of me and said read it and sign or just sign, in some cases. He didn’t tell us we would be sitting in the office for over 2 hours completing documents. What I didn’t understand is why he didn’t use the information on the system, instead he questioned us for every piece of information (we already had a plan in place with Coop, who had all our details on the system). Anyway, the rest of the staff really helped to restore some faith in the Coop, plus the day was spot on with the Coop funeral Service - some faith restored….

I sent an email to the Press office with a complaint.

From my 1st phone call this funeral was not managed according to feedback I see for other Coop Funeral homes.

1st phone call - the arranger (who referred to herself as the funeral director) was not interested in any questions I had. She rushed me off the phone saying all questions will be answered at the meeting.

The meeting. I was offered an appointment at 12.00, 12.30 or 13.00. We agreed 12.30pm. My dad and me arrived to hear the arranger opening the door saying "you should have been here at 11".

The arranger said we could come in and do the meeting. There was definitely no tea or sympathy. During the 90 mins the arranger told us she would not be able to communicate with us on Wed's after 2.30pm and did not work on Thu and Fri's. Then continued to complain about the phone not working and appeared impatient as we were trying to make plans.

90 mins later we paid nearly £2.5k deposit then to be told everything was in hand which it wasn't.

One week later I was conscious that the flowers needed to be ordered.
I tried calling on Mon, emailed and called on Tue and called again on Wed to no response.
I then called the crematorium to confirm the booking was in place.
At this point I was very stressed worrying that I wasn't sorting things out for my dad.
I called several numbers for Coop funeral care to get help as the arranger seem to disappear.
Eventually someone in West Wickham said they would help and sort out the flowers and be at the location to collect them if there was a problem. I was appreciative of this person.

On Thu I received a called from a contact at Battersea who said they were taking over.. again I was grateful.

At this point.. I have the order of service and memorial cards being arranged by Battersea and the flowers by West Wickham.

The car we hired has a smashed dividing window behind the driver and the 6 of us felt very squashed.
The funeral director was professional and helpful.. again grateful to him.

I hope no one else has to go through this stress. I do not feel that I should pay the total price for something we trusted in that was so poorly managed. I felt I done a lot of chasing while we paid for someone to take that stress away from us.

Totally disappointed and feel it inappropriate that I now have to pay the final balance without consideration to a discount for our stressful experience.

The care that the family and I received from Darren and all the of the Undertakers was exceptional. Their professionalism and politeness will leave a lasting effect on us all. Thank you so very much.

The office is operated by one personnel for 2 and 3/4 days per week. I was unable to communicate with the office after 15:00hrs on Wednesdays.
The personnel, although competent in the office administration is not suitable for dealing with bereaved families.

  • 1 Bernadette Hibbert 10th Jan 2022

    Good afternoon
I am writing to you to complain about the service I received regarding the arrangements for my mother’s funeral.

Yves had me really stress out over Christmas. I received a call from Yves telling me that I needed the deeds for the burial plot, otherwise the funeral could NOT take place. She had me frantically searching all over Christmas for the deeds paperwork . Even though I told her I didn’t have any deeds she still insisted that I had to have the deeds.

It turns out the Yves was speaking to the wrong cemetery. Yves was speaking to Streatham Vale cemetery when she should have contacted South London Crematorium in Rowan Road SW16. I had to get in touch with the cemetery myself and it turned out that I didn’t need deeds at all, as mum owed the plot.

I was told by Yves on the 29th Dec 2021 that someone would get back to me on that same day to tell me when we could go and see mum at rest in the chapel. No one got back to me.
On the 3oth of Dec I called the office twice to be told that someone would get back to me. No one called me.
I then did check my phone and Peter Denys did call me back on the 30th Dec, but unfortunately I did not receive the calls.
I then spoke to Peter Denys on the 31st of Dec and was told I could view mums body on the 3rd Jan 2022 between 11am -1pm

This didn’t give much time to contact family members to go and see mum in the chapel of rest. I was under the impression that mums body would be at Brixton Hill Co-op and then I received a text on the 3rd of January 2022 at 09.05 am telling me that mum was at Garratt Lane in Tooting, after I had told the family to go to the Coop Brixton Hill Office.

( I am assuming that once I figured out that Yves was dealing with the wrong cemetery she obviously did not change the location for viewing to Brixton Hill Coop. And that is why my mum ended up at your Tooting branch instead laying in the Brixton Hill Chapel of rest.)

I ordered a spray of Lillie’s ( which are my mother’s favourite flowers) to go on top of the coffin and she was given a mixture of pink and white coronations. (NOT HAPPY)

We also had a colour scheme of Gold. The men were to wear gold ties and the ladies to wear gold scarfs. Peter Denys promised us that he would tell all the pall bearers to wear gold ties. On the day they turned up with no gold ties and they told us that they were never give those instructions to wear gold ties etc.

All in all my experience with your company has not been satisfactory. I would be grateful, if someone could get back to urgently with an explanation, as to why we were not given what we asked for.

    Regards,
    Bernadette Hibbert
